Emotional Intelligence Drives Success

Which way are your emotions driving you? While we all have ups and downs, learning to master and direct your emotions can determine the degree of success you enjoy by getting in the driver’s seat and steering yourself, your committee or your team towards success.

Many times, we think of emotions as being counter to logic; but, Emotional Intelligence—which is the ability to heighten emotional awareness to be strategic and intentional in using your emotions and those of other people to increase collaborative communication and efforts to achieve project goals—can combine emotions with logic in a powerful way!

Emotions play a role in what we think, say and do. So, you can imagine how essential emotions are in being strategic as we think, plan and act. Taking time to consider how emotions play out for you and your group to regroup—especially under stress and pressure—can save time, energy and money so that emotional energy is well-spent, rather than wasted.

My colleague Dr. Hendrie Weisinger, a psychologist and expert on Emotional Intelligence, are collaborating on a book about Emotional Intelligence in project teams. Building your emotional intelligence involves four skill areas, and begins with developing greater self awareness. This means real-time awareness of your feelings and making deliberate choices to bring forth the right set of moods that help you accomplish your immediate outcomes. This can require staying calm in situations when you would naturally prefer to vent, or projecting poise and confidence when your team is under pressure and need reassurance they can do the job.

The money question; if you could choose emotions like you choose items on a cafeteria menu, what are the top three emotions that would fuel you for a successful today?
